Agave: the healthy and delicious alternative to sugar

While an occasional dessert is the ultimate mood lifter, too much sugar in your diet will be detrimental to your health. Enter agave: the healthy and delicious alternative to sugar.

When you consume sugar, insulin is produced in your body, and too much insulin has been linked to all kinds of problems such as depression, lethargy, hypertension, heart disease, type II diabetes and even Alzheimer’s. So if you really enjoy sweets, agave might be the answer for you. Agave is a sweet syrupy liquid found inside a plant that grows in Mexico.

Cellulite: can we all finally agree it’s natural and not nasty?

Cellulite is not a medical term or condition. The word was coined by European spas several decades ago and later took hold in the U.S. in the early 70’s. Now that beauty icon Kim Kardashian has said, “So What!” to her cellulite, can we all finally agree it’s natural and not nasty?

Ninety percent of women have dimpled skin around their thighs and hips that is referred to as cellulite. And we’re obsessed with getting rid of it because the current accepted beauty norm says it’s a problem.

Renew Your Spring Spirit with Meditation

Cell phones ringing, text alerts beeping, kids crying, dogs barking, TV blasting. Sound familiar? In our technologically advanced culture, filled with stimuli to keep us going twenty-four hours a day, there is no encouragement for silence or reflection—unless you’re a three-year-old child in time-out! Being still, even for a moment, seems totally unnecessary and, even more so, detrimental to the constantly moving treadmill of life we run upon. It’s as if we’re afraid of losing our place if we stop.

5 Reasons to Eat Raw Foods

If you’re a food lover like me, chances are you’ve stayed away from the whole raw food movement. After all, what could replace the flavorful aroma of a simmering pot of chicken soup on the stove or the tangy spiced tomatoes in a homemade marinara sauce? But what if you could enjoy the best of both worlds—cooked and raw? I’ve found it’s very easy to do by following a simple mantra: everything in moderation.

Technically raw food is unprocessed, uncooked, plant based foods such as dried and fresh fruits, veggies, sprouts, nuts, grains and seeds. Some of these can be slightly cooked as long as they’re not heated over 116 degrees F.

Why bother eating raw? What’s in it for you?

Let the Sunshine In!

Music has an amazing ability to affect our spirit. I’m sure you have your own special songs that instantly bring back good memories and feelings of peace or happiness. One of my favorites was on the top of the charts when I was only seven years old—“Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In” by The Fifth Dimension. I had no idea what the song meant, but I sang it constantly. It made me feel good. It made me want to dance. It made me want to sing at the top of my lungs. And even today, I still find myself singing the words, “Let the Sunshine In” every morning as I roll up the shades in my living room and welcome in the new day.

The lyrics to “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In” speak about a special time—The Age of Aquarius—when the earth will be filled with peace and love. Astrologists say we have now entered into the Age of Aquarius. Better yet, I recently received an email saying that the exact planet formation that is delineated in the song will actually be happening this year…on February 14th—the day dedicated to St Valentine, the patron saint of Love! On 2/14 at dawn, the Moon is in the seventh house and Jupiter aligns with Mars.

The song goes on to say that when this exact constellation takes place, then peace will guide the planets and love will steer the stars. WOW! Could you possibly believe and envision that this could happen in our own lifetimes? Why not! Our thoughts and visions create the reality of each and every day to come. Maybe The Fifth Dimension was on to something. Maybe they had insight beyond the space and time of our third dimensional world as know it.

So, as you welcome in a new era, President Obama, and the release of old systems that don’t work anymore, why not open up your heart and let the sunshine in! Peace in the world starts with peace in your heart.

Feel Good Movies Move Me

I don’t enjoy watching violent or scary movies anymore. They keep me up at night. They tense my nerves. They make me angry. They make me sad. None of this is entertaining or enlightening to me. None of this makes me feel good. Life is stressful enough. A movie shouldn’t make it more stressful. Yes, I know…it’s just a movie. It’s not real. But our lives, moods and actions are influenced by what we see and hear all day. If something ignites negative emotions, I’d rather skip it. I’d rather stay in my happy zone!

I prefer a good story with interesting characters and dialog. And maybe even a few important life lessons thrown in. It could be a drama or comedy, although I do love to laugh more than cry.
There are plenty of movies being produced both here and abroad with these qualities.

There’s also an interesting company called Spiritual Cinema that produces movies with spiritual themes. Not to be confused with religious themes, these are movies that are inspirational. They’re thought-provoking and compassionate stories and documentaries. Producer Steven Simon and others started the company a few years ago as a subscription based model. For a small monthly fee, you receive a DVD with that month’s selections. For more information, visit www.spiritualcinemacircle.com.
